From Teacher to Doula
With school starting soon, here’s how my work as a special education teacher continues to shape the way I support families as a doula
I’m not only a doula
I’m also a part-time special education teacher here in Saskatoon.
The two roles overlap in beautiful ways.
Patience & Presence
Teaching taught me to meet people where they are - moving at their pace, without rushing.
Individualized Support
In special education, no two students are alike.
The same is true in birth and postpartum.
Every family deserves care that fits them.
Advocacy & Communication
I’ve learned to listen deeply,
break down information clearly,
and help families feel heard.
Compassion & Calm
Holding space through challenges in the classroom prepared me to hold space through the intensity and beauty of birth.
As the school year begins,
I’m reminded of how much my teaching continues
to prepare me for doula work in ways I never expected.
And I bring those skills to every birth,
every postpartum visit,
every family I support.
Curious about doula care and how I can support you?
Message me, I’d love to talk.
