Labour Positions That Support Your Body & Baby
👣 Move through labour with comfort, confidence & ease.
Why Positions Matter
Changing positions in labour can:
🌿 Help baby find the best position
🌿 Ease intensity of contractions
🌿 Open the pelvis
🌿 Encourage labour to progress
🌿 Support your instincts and comfort
🌿Upright Positions
Let gravity help baby move down
Standing & leaning forward (on partner or wall)
Slow dancing or swaying with a partner
Walking or pacing
Climbing stairs (sideways or one foot at a time)
Tip: Change positions every 30–60 minutes.
🌿Supported & Semi-Upright
Great for rest without lying flat
Sitting on a birth ball (gentle bouncing or hip circles)
Toilet sitting (yes, really! Opens the pelvis)
Backwards chair sitting (lean on the chair back)
Hands & knees (relieves back labour)
Tip: Use pillows or a partner for extra support.
🌿Restful & Relaxed
Your body can still work while you rest
Side-lying with pillows (great with an epidural too)
Supported squat (partner holds or use a squat bar)
Rebozo sifting (relax your belly and hips)
Kneeling & leaning forward (on a bed or couch)
Tip: Sometimes slowing down is exactly what’s needed.
🌿Movement-Based Positions
Keep things moving when labour stalls
Lunges (with foot on chair or step)
Pelvic tilts or rocking
Hip circles on all fours or on a ball
Shifting weight side-to-side
Tip: Each movement encourages baby to rotate & descend.
