Labour Positions That Support Your Body & Baby

👣 Move through labour with comfort, confidence & ease.

Why Positions Matter

Changing positions in labour can:

🌿 Help baby find the best position

🌿 Ease intensity of contractions

🌿 Open the pelvis

🌿 Encourage labour to progress

🌿 Support your instincts and comfort

🌿Upright Positions

Let gravity help baby move down

  • Standing & leaning forward (on partner or wall)

  • Slow dancing or swaying with a partner

  • Walking or pacing

  • Climbing stairs (sideways or one foot at a time)

Tip: Change positions every 30–60 minutes.

🌿Supported & Semi-Upright

Great for rest without lying flat

  • Sitting on a birth ball (gentle bouncing or hip circles)

  • Toilet sitting (yes, really! Opens the pelvis)

  • Backwards chair sitting (lean on the chair back)

  • Hands & knees (relieves back labour)

Tip: Use pillows or a partner for extra support.

🌿Restful & Relaxed

Your body can still work while you rest

  • Side-lying with pillows (great with an epidural too)

  • Supported squat (partner holds or use a squat bar)

  • Rebozo sifting (relax your belly and hips)

  • Kneeling & leaning forward (on a bed or couch)

Tip: Sometimes slowing down is exactly what’s needed.

🌿Movement-Based Positions

Keep things moving when labour stalls

  • Lunges (with foot on chair or step)

  • Pelvic tilts or rocking

  • Hip circles on all fours or on a ball

  • Shifting weight side-to-side

Tip: Each movement encourages baby to rotate & descend.

Trust Your Instincts

🤍 Your body is wise

🤍 You don’t need to remember every position

🤍 Follow what feels good

🤍 A doula, midwife, or nurse can offer ideas if you're unsure
